Known Trivia

  • Samantha Morton was originally the voice of Samantha. She was present on the set with Joaquin Phoenix every day. After the filming wrapped and Spike Jonze started editing the movie, he felt like something was not right. With Morton’s blessing, he decided to recast the role and Scarlett Johansson was brought as a replacement. 38 of 38 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • Jonze’s friend Steven Soderbergh helped him trim the film at one point by re-editing one early version of the film from two-and-a-half hours down to 90 minutes…all in twenty-four hours’ time. 19 of 20 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • This is the only movie Spike Jonze has written as well as directed, completely from his own original script. 16 of 17 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |
  • Amy Adams said that the director would essentially lock her and Joaquin Phoenix in a room for an hour or two, and just make them talk to each other every other day. He did this so that they could get to know each other better. Adams credits this for her and Phoenix’s close friendship. 5 of 5 found this interesting Interesting? YesNo |

Goofs: Factual errors: On the spine of the physics book he was reading, "Unknown" was misspelled as "Unkown".

Plot: A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that's designed to meet his every need.  »

Story: A lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that’s designed to meet his every need.

Synopsis: "Her". Looking for intimacy in all the wrong places. Imagine if Siri, the iPhone voice, were enhanced so she could actually think. She flirts with you, tells you she loves you, tells you how special you are. She has everything but a physical form. (But with Scarlett Johansson’s cooing voice, she’s quite fetching.)

Joaquin Phoenix takes us down a path being trod by many young people looking for something but not getting it. More texting, more sexting, more Facebook friends. And still … emptiness.

Here we see Theodore grappling with real life, real relationships, real women and instead retreating back to his cyberlover. And when the infamous "they" abruptly discontinue the new operating system (Os 1), Theodore and his would-be, kinda, sorta girlfriend (Amy Adams) are jolted into reality.

Or what passes for reality. It elicits the question "What is reality?" Emotion? It’s there. Intimacy? Yeah, everything except the touching.

A couple of female roles were disappointing by their brevity. Rooney Mara and the marvelous Olivia Wilde (recognizable as 13 in "House") were hardly more than background actors.

Her (2013)

It’s so cool that Warner Bros. is taking a chance on Spike Jonze’s offbeat follow-up to Where the Wild Things Are (2009); it’s hard to imagine film executives looking up from their tablets in excitement after being pitched a story about a man who falls in love with an operating system. Starring foot-in-mouth specialist Joaquin Phoenix.
